The Story
The time of the falling thread is over. It has been for hundreds of years. Now the dragon riders have been scattered. Only when a great queen rises will you ever see the dragons enmass. They live as parts of Holds, in their own communities, or on their own. They’ve become baggage and mail carriers. The use of the great dragons of the past has faded away, and now they are just beings. The Weyrs faded away, and disbanded, there was no use for them any more.
At least this was the story. A hundred and sixty years ago, a young woman of a rare gold dragon was asked by the Cities of Pern to find a use for the dragons. The dragons were getting lazy, and their riders were causing trouble you see. This young woman, Alira, and her gold, Inallath, found a place to claim for all dragons. The western continent. There were mountains, but mostly it was useless. She found something else there. A broken ship. She explored it and found nothing but dust and broken dreams. There was something special on this odd ship. Lazers. And their power cells still worked. After the first shot, she asked Inallath to call all dragons to them. They moved the ship into place and carved out a new Weyr. Darkened Weyr, because after the dust settled the rock was charred, black, and darkened. This was to be the new and only weyr on the planet of Pern.
Alira set up a system where the dragon riders were again powerful. They were watchers, and learners. They were the new police. As her weyr grew she realized that the Lords and Ladies who were in control of the cities were corrupt. They let crime grow and fester. Slavery was becoming the norm, and children were forced to work at young ages. She and those who were loyal to her started to crack down on the wrongs. After all when a Rider arrives with a fire breathing dragon you tend to listen.
To explain a bit more, Pern has fallen into major slavery, and fell into it about two hundred years ago. Same with Child Labor, just to keep out of Slavery. The Rider's have been trying to iradicate it for the last 160 years, but to no avail. It is deeply entrenched. The only place on the planet that does not have slavery or child labor is Dark City.
She asked that normal people, those who were not riders or royals, but were slaves, or just your regular people, to come to the western continent and set up towns, and a great city. Darkened Weyr needed it’s own support system. They were to be beholden to their own, and no one else. That was when a young man by the name of Charken came forward. He was willing to start this Dark City, with his family and those who were willing to come could. The city was at the bottom of the mountain that Darkened Weyr was created in. It wasn’t long before those who were poor or outcasts were coming to the Dark City, and it started to grow, quickly. Farms started to crop up outside the gates of the city, and soon a mine was founded off to the east in the eastern range of the west.
Now that the dragons had a purpose they started to arrive in droves, and yet they barely filled the newly made Weyr. There were three bronze riders in total, and after about three years Inallath rose, calling for the three bronzes to come after her. They all followed her, but she didn’t expect a smaller, yet proud brown to follow her into the sky. Hareth was a proud brown, and almost as big as a bronze, but not quite. Only through his stamina did he catch Inallath. His rider, M’arg, was now the Weyrleader, and he did not do a bad job. Inallath’s clutch was odd. Two reds, with six greens, five blues, two browns, one silver, a single bronze, two black and a queen egg, were all on the sands. Of course those extra colors were not known about. All anyone knew was that the brown and gold had created a large clutch and they were searching for all sorts of riders. Once they hatched some were thought to be bad omens for the Weyr, but Alira refused to believe this and let each of the dragons prove for themselves that they were good. Every clutch after that at Darkened Weyr had the entire spectrum of color, with more shades of all the rest. Inallath and Hareth’s second clutch held a new surprise. The dragons were bi-toned, two colors or more. They seemed to be sexless, but some of them were obviously male, or female, not many though. The Weyr was filling. Slowly, the mountain was huge and they’d used all of the lazer’s power to get the weyr carved out of it.
It’s been years since the creation of the Peacekeepers, and people have come to terms with the fact that Dragons are again powerful. Only ten years ago a set of gold twins were born to the eldest queen. They were her only Golden daughters. When she died five years ago, the twins took the thrown of Sr. Queen. The Jr. Queens at the time did have other queens, but Amirath was the first queen to rise out of her year. Only a few weeks later Lillith rose, forcing the large sands to be used for two queens. The clutch that came from this were trained easily, and are now scattered around the world, teaching at other Peacekeeper Weyrs or at Darkened Weyr learning special tasks. The weyr is strong, but there are still Cities out there who don’t let the Peacekeeper dragons in to do their jobs. The Darkened Weyrwoman, Lokin, is tired of this, and starting to push the point. Only time will tell what will happen.
